Elisabeth O and her niece arrived in Mitchell at our prestigious Wal-Mart accommodation at 9:15 this morning for cocoa and muffins. We compared maps and tips. They were going west from Minnesota. We 3 girls hopped into the Honda and went to see the Word’s Only Corn Palace. This was originally built in 1892 when the town was only 12 years old. Two men decided to showcase the crops grown in the area to attract immigrant farmers. A Festival was held at the same time and both continues to this day. The Corn Palace is known as a folk-art wonder on the Prairies of South Dakota. It is truly a magnificent structure. Over 3,000 bushels of corn, grains, barley and grasses are used. The permanent interior was designed by Oscar Howe, the late Sioux artist. One picture shows 13 colors of corn used.
After this, we headed east to Sioux Falls where we fueled at Flying J and enjoyed their lunch. Headed up the I 29, due north through miles and miles of corn fields. We stopped at Watertown at 3 p.m. at Wal-Mart. 34 degrees but a thunderstorm predicted.
