We went to the Canadian Bushplane Heritage Centre which also honours fire management. They have many planes from the Silver Dart, the first powered flight in Canada to the Canadair CL215 , the first water bomber developed in Ontario. There is a 1940 fire camp, 30’ operational Fire Tower, Ranger’s Office and 2 movies of First Response and Fire Fighting. I found it very interesting knowing Dick B who used bush experience to get his pilots license and Alex who was in forestry for his career. When Chris and Paul were about 4 and 6, we visited A and R in Cranbrook and Alex took us up to a Fire Tower to visit a fellow on duty on top of a mountain. They had a collapsible canoe, most important for early transportation. They also honoured Roberta Bondar who is from this town.
Across the street was the Old Stone House which was used in fur trade days by a man and his Ojibway wife and their 13 children. The original one was a stone powder magazine for the Northwest Trading company, which he converted by adding a log structure above.
We drove down to the waterfront and walked through Roberta Bondar Park. The huge tent for concerts in behind Ron and I when we were at the locks.
