On to White River, ON

We left in beautiful sunshine, east on Hwy 17. Fuel at the Husky was $89.9. We stopped at the Terry Fox Memorial, overlooking Lake Superior. Terry was a young man from Pt Coquitllam, B.C. who lost his leg to cancer at 18 and planned his Marathon of Hope, a 5,300 mile marathon, running across Canada to raise money for cancer research. He started at St. John's Newfoundland April 12, 1980, running 26 miles a day but had to stop here in Ontario when the cancer came back. Sadly he passed away June 28, 1981 but had raised $24 million. The people of ON have done a beautiful job remembering him.
We are going around Lake Superior, the largest body of fresh water in the world. It is vast. A morning fog hovers over it and you can sometimes just see the tops of the shore. There are pretty yellow, blue and white flowers along the highway. We've stopped at the Husky in White River, the home town of Winnie the Pooh. Capt. Harry Colebourn bought a black bear cub for $20 here in 1914 and named him Winnie after his hometown of Winnipeg. He took him overseas during WWI. Leaving him at the London Zoo for safe keeping while he was on duty in France, Christopher Robin, son of author A. A. Milne was captivated and this inspired the stories of Winnie the Pooh.
